Taxi FAQs

When it comes to insuring you taxi, it is likely that you will have a number of questions before you want to go ahead and accept a quote. That is completely normal and is why we have composed this list to help answer some of those burning questions!

Why is it more expensive to insure my taxi than my private car?

It is likely to be more expensive for you to get insurance for your taxi than for the car you use for personal errands.  This is due to the fact that you will be carrying customers which adds a certain risk to your policy.  As your private car will only be used by you and to carry a few non-paying passengers, this same risk does not exist.

Do I need special qualifications to get taxi insurance?

No, you do not need a special qualification to qualify for taxi insurance.  As long as you have the appropriate licence, this should not be a problem.

Can I get fleet insurance?

You can get taxi fleet insurance if you have multiple vehicles.  You will, however, have to ensure that you arrange the appropriate insurance.  If you intend on owning and driving numerous taxis, you will need fleet insurance as opposed to a single vehicle policy.

Does taxi insurance cover me for personal usage too?

This depends on your policy, though you should be covered.  In some places the rules can differ so you should check what the rules are in your area.  However, as a general rule, you will likely be covered for personal use.

What is the difference between public and private hire and what do I need?

As you can see from one of our previous blog posts, this depends on what type of taxi service you are providing.  Private hire taxis include pre-bookings and brands such as Uber, whereas public hire taxis can simply be flagged down off the street.

You can fill out a quote for both online and compare the best prices from the UK’s top providers.

Can other people drive my taxi?

This depends on who the named drivers on your car are.  Anyone who is a named driver can legally drive your car in the UK as they are covered under the insurance.  This is the same with fleet insurance.

Can I use my private car NCB on my taxi policy?

This typically varies from insurer to insurer.  The best plan of action would be to contact your potential insurers directly to discuss the possibility of this.
