Car and van insurance add-ons

When it comes to car or van insurance, there are actually a few extra little nuggets that you can add to your policy.  Examples of these will be key cover, breakdown cover and excess protection.  However, it is important to read the policy wording before deciding on any concrete as many insurance policies may come with these add-ons as standard.

Key cover

Key cover can be a useful little extra if you are someone who is prone to losing their keys.  This insurance essentially will allow you to get a replacement set of keys if yours are lost or stolen- sometimes just for your vehicle or even possibly for house and office purposes as well.

This can vary from insurer to insurer.  A lot of companies will not allow you to make a key claim if you have misplaced your set of keys, only if they have been stolen.  The best thing you can do is to read your own policy wording.

This add-on can range from anywhere between around £20-£40.  This price discrepancy will come from a varying level of cover.

Breakdown cover

Breakdown insurance does not necessarily need to be attached to your car insurance.  External providers can offer their own cover, such as the RAC and the AA.  However, it may not be included in your insurance policy and if you are not with an external provider as mentioned above, it may be worth adding something like this to the car insurance.

Excess protection

Excess protection is not always something that is included or offered with car insurance.  However, it can be a good idea to consider it.  This cover will allow you to be refunded the full amount of the excess in the event of a claim.  This is typically a one-off that will not apply in the event of multiple claims.

Replacement vehicle

Once again, this can come as standard as part of some insurance policies. However, that can be discovered by reading the policy wording.  A replacement vehicle is a pretty simple concept and will mean that you are entitled to a vehicle should yours breakdown.  This will hopefully avoid the instance in which you are left stranded by the roadside!

There are many options for additional extras when buying car insurance.  This list is not exclusive and different products will come as standard with different insurers.
