Modified car insurance

Modified car insurance applies to all car that have had some sort of change made to its appearance or how it runs.  This could be anything, ranging from tinted windows to an alteration to the suspension.  However, these changes will likely make a difference to your insurance premiums, so it is important to disclose all information relating to the modifications at the quote stage.

Are all modifications legal in the UK?

The answer to this is no.  Although a lot are perfectly safe and legal, there are a select few which are banned in this country.

For example, under-car neon lighting can put other drivers in danger as they make it harder for them to see.  If you have this type of modification, you could be landed with a large fine or even a court date.  The best way to avoid this is to do research before equipping your car with anything.

Do modifications affect my car insurance premiums?

This really depends on the modification in question.  If it is a cosmetic change, the vehicle may be judged to be at a greater risk of theft.  As you may be more likely to make a claim due to theft, insurers may choose to raise your premium.

Cars that have modifications to their engines and other internal parts will also raise your premiums as faster cars can cause more damage.  Insurers will raise prices to reflect this.

Lastly, the modifications you add will increase the overall value of your car which will also heighten prices.  Generally, the more expensive the car, the more expensive the parts are to replace.  Because of this, insurers will charge more to insure modified cars.

Can I get modified car insurance as a young driver?

There certainly are insurers out there who will cover you, yes!  Although it may take a bit more searching and may be a little more expensive for the reasons mentioned above, you should still be able to get insured!

Are there any mods that won’t affect my insurance?

Security devices such as immobilisers and alarm are considered modifications and will not affect the price of your insurance.  In fact, these may work to decrease your premiums as insurers view them as a safer risk!  This is the same with winter tyres in some places, as they help the handling of the vehicle which leads to a safer driving experience.

What are examples of common modifications?

Some of the most common in the UK are:

Changes to the colour or finish of your vehicle

Personalised number plates

Tinted windows

Changes to the exhaust

Upgrading the bumper

Do I need to declare my modifications?

Yes, even if you think they are unimportant, it is necessary that you tell your insurer about all changes you make.  If you fail to mention something, this may invalidate your insurance in the event of an accident.  Moral of the story- always disclose your mods, no matter how big or small!
